Let me first say that I never played golf before reading this book. For that matter, I haven't played golf since I read the book, yet I'm confident that, as a result of this tome of peerless wisdom, were I to play golf, I would be able to compete at a high amateur, if not professional, level. The author himself has assured me that I would now easily play at a 3 under par, if not better. Normally I would be suspicious of such claims, but I made him swear on his wife's grave, so I must take his word without further confirmation.The author also assured me that it was a very funny book. I can't address this claim, because when I said I read the book, what I meant is that I glanced at the cover before shoving it down the back of my pants and leaving the store without paying. That made me chuckle, so perhaps his claim that the book is humorous may be founded in fact.
If you want to improve your golf game, read this book! The fact that the author has never golfed in his life should not give you any reason to hesitate: I'm assured he plays a very mean game of ping pong.

This is probably the best golf/humor book I've ever read. OK so it's the only one I've read but that doesn't make it any less humorous and if I was an active golfer ( currently in golf remission ) I'm sure the instructive aspects would be beneficial. I've recommended Reed's book to several of my freinds who are infected with the golf virus and look forward to future "...from under the hat." titles.
Just finished it for the second time, better yet second time. Good job for a first time author and very entertaining for a golf instruction book. I've read many and most of them are hard to read and keep my attention. Some are just plain boring, some still sitting unfinished in my book case, not this one. Looking forward to book 2.
"Under the Hat" is an entertaining primer about how to play golf. Amateurs, professionals and fans of golf will
find the experiences described to be entertaining as well as informative.
The "Hat" man is a real hoot! His conversations with his golf mates (real and imaginary) are hilarious and his quotes from the pros segue nicely into the subject matter. This guy must be an engineer. He did his homework before putting words to paper. I've been golfing for 35 years myself and still picked up a tip or two. His detailed explanations hit the nail on the head which is what most of us shlubs, shmoes, and hackers should be doing on Saturday's instead of playing golf. Finally, any book that has multiple references to the classic golf movie Caddyshack is a must read for any gopher...uh golfer. Needless to say I thoroughly enjoyed the book and am looking forward to future offerings from "Under the Hat".
I had the pleasure of reading this book. I laughed through the whole thing, but also learned things about golf I had never considered I finally realize why I do the things I do when attempting to play and also some pointers to improve. Popovich, a first time author, is delightful in his approach. He obviously is a good golfer, but doesn't take himself seriously and is encouraging all those who attempt to play this game to do the same. Everyone who plays golf, who is contemplating playing golf or just enjoys watching golf on TV should absolutely read this book. I guarantee you will be entertained and you might just learn something from "under the Hat".
Though not a golfer, my husband has recently (re)taken up the game, therefore copious amounts of written material involving golf instruction have been cluttering up all the empty counter space in my house, which is how I found myself drawn to a particular selection called GOLF WISDOM FROM UNDER THE HAT. I actually found myself leafing through and then going back to start a chapter from the beginning, not so much because I cared about the relevant information peppered throughout the pages, which my hubby seems to have found quite insightful, but because I actually found myself smiling, sometimes out right laughing, at the witty banter the author provides. In a literary world filled with every perspective on golf, this one contains information AND humor---a powerful combination, even to a non-golfer. I cannot say it inspired me to take up the game, but I at least found one aspect I could enjoy alongside my husband---the entertaining read of Popovich’s book.
This is a must read for anyone. I love golf, even when I have had a rough round but that feeling of aarrgg does creep in. Reed has shared the aarrgg in this book and surrounded it with humor. It is so rewarding to know that I am not the only one going through the roller coaster of emotions at the golf course. There is great advice presented in a way that will make you better without all of the pages and pages of drills, how to and what not to do's. Can't wait to play my next round. I feel better and more confident already.
I had the pleasure of meeting and playing a few holes with Reed at San Luis Rey Downs, Bonsall Ca. , he is amazing on the golf course. This guy can play golf and now I have learned that he can write a book as good as he plays the game. I can't wait to get his next book. Oh, " he does wear that silly hat" but there is a reason.
